  • Introduction: Anke Hahn (Deutsche Kinemathek)

Pina Bausch and the dancers of her Tanztheater Wuppertal ensemble found worldwide fame in the 1970s with pieces that fused everyday elements with the artistic avant-garde. Pop songs, jazz, opera, and classical compositions form the musical background for movement sequences that are by turns absurd, by turns poetic. Filmmaker Klaus Wildenhahn observes the ensemble’s development of a new piece, combining rehearsal footage with impressions of urban Wuppertal and interviews with workers.
